The Sexual Assault Survivors program is designed for individuals who are or have been sexually abused or assaulted. This program is offered in an individual, confidential counselling setting to men and women 16 years or older and is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care

 The Timmins Family Counselling Centre strives to:

♦ Create a safe place and trusting environment to encourage mutual support;

♦ Respect confidentiality;

♦ Assuring a level of support that is based on assessment of the individual's needs.

♦ Early recollection of feelings and beliefs in order to empower women and men;

♦ Cognitive restructuring to create awareness of the many dimensions underlying sexual assault;

♦ Promote awareness that sexual assault is a societal problem;

♦ Offer education through awareness;

♦ Respect the diverse needs of all women and men including Francophones, Anglophones, Aboriginals and individuals with disabilities.

Your Rights... 

♦ To be free from pressure either reporting or refrain from reporting;

♦ To be informed of all reporting options before deciding to file a formal report;

♦ To have any allegations of sexual assault investigated;

♦ To be notified of existing services available.


♦ Fewer than 1 in 10 sexual assault victims report crime to the police.

♦ Sexual assault is any unwanted or non-consensual sexual act(s), or the threat of action of a sexual nature, that is imposed on another individual. There are different types of sexual assault.

♦ Sexual assault of any kind is a serious and violent crime of power and control.

♦ The effects of sexual assault include but are not limited to:

*self-destructive behavior - suicidal ideations, alcoholism, refuse all help offered;

*psychological - depression, shame, loss of confidence, anxiety, flash-back(s), self-blamming, guilt;

*physical - fatigue, fractures, infections, tearing, internal bleeding; 

*social influence - isolation, generalized fears.
